The Sumner County Sheriff’s Office employees are protected under Civil Service. In order to be considered for a position with the Sumner County Sheriff’s Office one must first take and pass the Civil Service Exam.
With the exception of Correctional Officer positions we give our Civil Service Exam only once a year. Our next test will be January 16, 2021

The Sumner County Sheriff’s Office is testing for the following positions:
Cook: Meal prep, ordering supplies, supervise inmates.
Maintenance Technician: Required to have: thorough knowledge of maintenance/construction and characteristics of motors, control equipment, relays, control transformers & communication equipment; knowledge of precision machine work and the mechanical characteristics of equipment installed in the facility; knowledge of correct procedures to be followed in all emergencies & routine functions; ability to utilize mechanical prints and electrical schematics; mechanical knowledge and ability to do routine maintenance on motor vehicles.
Clerical: Reports, filing, telecommunications, computer input, general office duties.
Correctional Officer: Responsible for the security and welfare of all inmates.
Deputy: Responding to and investigating routine calls.
Warrants Officer: Required to execute civil process as prescribed by law.
Qualifications include, but are not limited to: 18 years of age or older, high school diploma or accepted GED certificate, citizen of the U.S., no arrest or conviction for charges of force, violence, theft, dishonesty, gambling, liquor or controlled substances; have an honorable discharge from armed forces if applicable, have a good moral character and pass a background check; pass a physical, psychological and a drug screen; and have a valid driver’s license. Some computer experience is desired.
Subject to a passing score on the Civil Service Test, all persons seeking a position that will require them to attend the Law Enforcement Academy for certification must then successfully complete a physical fitness qualification course. The physical fitness qualification will be administered soon after the Civil Service Exam

The written test includes general aptitude questions. Applicants scoring 70 or above will be placed on a hiring roster for the remainder of the year 2021.
Location: Time and location to be announced in December A Picture I.D. is required.
IMMEDIATELY following the written test for a Deputy position, you will be required to take a physical agility test. THIS IS A PASS OR FAIL. If you fail to meet this minimal physical test, you will no longer be considered for the position of Deputy at this time. However, you can test again at the next scheduled test.
Requirements of physical agility:
Run 1 mile in 10 minutes or under.
25 sit-ups in 1 minute or under.
25 push-ups in 1 minute or under.
Please dress or bring change of clothes for this portion of testing.
