The Sumner County Sheriff’s Office is currently accepting applications for the following:
Corrections Officer: Corrections Officers play a vital role in the public safety and criminal justice community here in Sumner County. Corrections Officers generally work under direct supervision of an assigned supervisor and assumes responsibility for the safety, security and welfare of the visitors, staff and inmates in the Sumner County Jail as well as the community at large. Each of these functions shall be accomplished in accordance with recognized Tennessee Minimum Standards as well as established policies and procedures.
Qualifications include, but are not limited to: 18 years of age or older, high school diploma or accepted GED certificate, citizen of the U.S., no arrest or conviction for charges of force, violence, theft, dishonesty, gambling, liquor or controlled substances; have an honorable discharge from armed forces if applicable, have a good moral character and pass a background check; pass a physical, psychological and a drug screen; and have a valid driver’s license. Some computer experience is desired.
Applicant processing and testing is on-going upon application submission. A testing score of 70% is required for further processing of applicant status. Upon testing, photo identification is required.
Patrol Deputy: Patrol Deputies are responsible for responding to and investing routine calls for service. They perform and/or assist with criminal investigations, presenting and preservation of evidence, interviewing victims and witnesses. Patrol Deputies respond to a wide range of public services request and satisfy numerous other responsibilities on the plane of policing and public service.
You must be a United States Citizen. You must have honorable discharge if military service was performed. You must be a minimum of 18 years old, be a high school or GED graduate, pass a written civil service test. Pass a background investigation, pass physical examination, pass psychological examination (or possess current psychological certifaction0, pass drug screening test and be willing to work shifts, weekends, and holidays as needed. You will be required to comply with a Tennessee Police Officer Standards and Training rules and regulations any maybe required to become P.O.S.T. position includes assignments to patrol, warrants, school resource program, drug task force, court security and other similar duties as needed. You will be required to maintain a valid driver’s license.
If you are not POST Certified, you will be required to pass a physical agility test when applying for a deputy position. This is a pass or fail test. If you do not successfully complete the physical agility examination, you will no longer be considered for this position. Those applicants who do not successfully complete the physical agility section of this testing will remain eligible for positions as Corrections Officers. The physical agility test will consist of the following:
1. 25 push-ups in 1 minute,
2. 25 sit-ups in 1 minute,
3. 1 mile run in 10 minutes.
School Resource Officer (SRO): School Resource Officers with the Sumner County Sheriff's Office have a rewarding career that is versatile and carries much responsibility. School Resources Officers are assigned to Sumner County Schools and will instruct on law enforcement related topics, establish trust and credibility with students, parents and faculty. School Resource Officers ensure security for school events, maintain order and enforce laws for their assigned school. School Resource Officers are often called upon for special assignments and teams for various functions.
School Resource Officer Requirements:
1. 2 years of experience as a police officer, and
2. Current Tennessee post certified officer, or
3. 2 years of experience as an out of state police officer and POST certified in that state.
- Candidates with out of state POST Certifications must complete a 3 week POST transition course.
- For POST Certified Applicants, a physical agility is not required.

Testing Process for Deputy or SRO:
- The written test includes general aptitude questions. Applicants scoring 70% or above will be placed on a hiring roster for the remainder of the year 2022.
- Photo identification is required.
Maintenance – Entry Level:
Must be a United States citizen. Must be minimum of 18 years old, high school or GED graduate, pass civil service written test, pass background investigation, pass physical examination, pass drug screening test and be willing to work shifts, weekends and holidays as needed. Must have verifiable experience in maintenance work and provide references. Maintenance positions within the Sheriff’s Office are either building or automotive maintenance. Should there be a vacancy, all maintenance applicants will be notified whether the position is for building or automotive maintenance. Will be required to maintain a valid driver’s license. Applicants will also be required to interview with an oral board.
Clerical –Entry Level:
Must be a United States citizen. Must be minimum of 18 years old, high school or GED graduate, pass written civil service test, pass background investigation, pass physical examination, pass drug screening test and be willing to work shifts, weekends and holidays as needed. May be required to become T.B.I. /N.C.I.C. certified and maintain T.B.I. /N.C.I.C. certification.
Cook – Entry Level:
Must be a United States citizen. Must be minimum of 18 years old, high school or GED graduate, pass civil service written test, pass background investigation, pass physical examination, pass drug screening test and be willing to work shifts, weekends and holidays as needed. Must have verifiable experience as a cook, working with budgets, menus, ordering supplies and supervisory experience of employees or volunteers and provide references. Will be required to maintain a valid driver’s license.
